UNICEF is one of the world's leading children's charities. The UK office raises funds for worldwide emergency and development work and advocates for lasting change for children.
This job involves the following responsibilities:
- responsible for overall website strategy and maintenance
- originate content for UNICEF UK’s main website (www.unicef.org.uk), including feature articles, HTML emails, photography and video
- work with internal teams to develop content for specific areas such as campaigns, celebrities, education and emergencies
- maintain standards of content according to house style and act as brand guardian
- develop specifications for new website functionality and microsites
- identify suitable content for publishing on You Tube and social networking sites
- line manage a Web Editor and Online Marketing Support Officer, including one-to-one meetings, appraisals, recruitment and training/development
- brief and manage external suppliers and freelancers, including website designers
- facilitate the efficient marketing of websites and provide statistical feedback.
Web Consultant, UNICEF Philippines, Oct 09 to Feb 10
UNICEF Philippines manages education, health, protection, communication and emergency programmes for children in the Philippines.
I undertook this work on secondment from UNICEF UK. This job involved the following responsibilities:
- overview the website (www.unicef.ph) and help maximise online fundraising
- gather and build content for the website and social media, including visiting project sites and developing feature articles, photo essays and videos
- develop a six month content plan, closely aligned with PR and marketing plans
- develop a themed homepage to support campaign launches
- develop the potential of social media sites for advocacy and fundraising
- assist in the technical specification and choice of developers for an online shop
- develop online and offline marketing plans for the site.
Web and Publications Editor, The Health Foundation, Jul 06 to Jan 08
The Health Foundation is an independent charity working to improve the quality of healthcare across the UK and internationally.
This job involved the following responsibilities:
- managing and editing the Health Foundation’s website (www.health.org.uk)
- overseeing the redesign and relaunch of the Foundation’s website in April 2007
- contributing to overall communications strategy and web and publications in particular
- writing news, case studies and other content for the site
- commissioning and editing feature articles for the site from international experts
- writing a regular e-newsletter about the Foundation and its work
- managing and editing print publications, including policy briefings, research reports, conference brochures and an annual review
- sourcing, commissioning and editing images for print and web
- contributing to website marketing campaigns
- managing the web and publications work of the Communications Coordinator.
Website and Communications Officer, LGIB, Jul 04 to Jul 06
Until 2007, the Local Government International Bureau (LGIB) represented UK local government in Europe and internationally and worked with councils on international development projects. It is now part of the Local Government Association (LGA).
This job involved the following responsibilities:
- managing and editing the LGIB’s main website and other microsites, including the UK Local Government Alliance for International Development
- project managing a major redesign and relaunch of the main LGIB website
- designing and building new microsites as needed
- writing daily news and regular feature articles for the web
- commissioning articles for the site and ensuring that policy officers provide relevant copy
- writing news, feature and opinion articles for the LGIB’s monthly magazine
- sourcing and editing images for the LGIB websites and magazine
- contributing content to the UN’s Millennium Campaign website
- leading a cross-organisational website management project group
- managing the European Officers Network online forum
- designing and implementing website marketing campaigns
- conducting European and international policy work on e-government.
During my time at the LGIB, the web traffic increased by nearly 80%, from an average of 422,000 hits a month before the relaunch in April 2005, to 756,000 hits thereafter.

PML is a publishing company that provides trade magazines, directories and websites for the European pharmaceutical and medical research industries.
The job involved the following responsibilities:
- setting up and then maintaining PMLive.com, an online magazine for the UK and European pharmaceutical industry
- writing and editing weekly news and feature articles for the website
- writing, commissioning and editing regular feature and opinion articles for Pharmaceutical Marketing magazine, including from government ministers
- sourcing and editing images for the website
- producing a weekly email newsletter for registered users
- marketing the site through on and offline promotions
- managing an editorial assistant and leading the web project team
- managing web budgets.
Central Content Editor, ConsumerDesk UK - Jun 00 to Jun 01
ConsumerDesk was a comparison-shopping website based in the Netherlands.
The job involved the following responsibilities:
- writing and editing news, features, buyers’ guides and help screens
- producing regular email newsletters for registered users
- developing content across various national sites and coordinating translation
- writing press releases and a business-to-business newsletter
- developing an international corporate website.
